How do meth makers manage to cook meth even though they are high school dropouts?

Seriously. The fact that they have to turn to a life of crime shows that they probably didn't really do all that well in school and don't have too many careers open to them, yet somehow they have the scientific knowledge to make advanced chemical compounds. It boggles the mind.
